1. Select suitable competing products through SimilarWeb

First of all, let’s clarify a concept. When we do a project, there will be two situations, one is that there is a competing product, and the other is that there is no competing product.

In the case where there are no competing products, one possibility is that your project and idea have no value. Another possibility is that your project is really awesome and the threshold is too high. It was almost unassailable at that time (the early days of Open AI).

So let’s go back to the project with competing products. We need to analyze the traffic of it and its website. For rough traffic analysis, I personally think that the best tool is SimilarWeb. Let’s break down this step next.

1.1. Select appropriate competing products for analysis

Let’s take character.ai as an example. It is the industry leader in Ai RolePlay (AI role playing). Click on website performance (website performance), as shown in the figure:

We can see many indicators on the first screen, which are pv (total number of views), Mpv (month), and an approximate number of users.

But at this time we need data for comparison (single data cannot form a coordinate system). We can compare some products. If you are not familiar with the industry, you can click on Similar Sites (similar web pages) in the picture above.

But in fact, it can only give you a rough comparison of similar websites, and it is not very accurate (it does not enter the subdivision). The best way is manual research (in fact, it requires in-depth subdivision).

For example, I added two domestic overseas products, one is takie by minimax, and the other is crushOn.

In comparison, even CrushOn, which has the best overseas traffic performance in China, is far behind Cai (in the Ai Role play track).

We can see that the search traffic performance of talkie and crushOn is very good, and cai has already done well because of its own popularity and brand.
